Open Call: Genius Loci Weimar 2026 — Facade Mapping on Historic Buildings

One of Europe’s most respected projection mapping festivals is inviting artists to submit concepts for its 2026 edition. Genius Loci Weimar has launched an international open call under the theme “Democracy and Society” — and the deadline is approaching fast.

What is Genius Loci Weimar? Video Mapping Competition

Genius Loci Weimar is an annual international festival dedicated to video mapping and facade projection art, held in the historic city of Weimar, Germany. Since 2012, the festival has transformed iconic architectural landmarks into large-scale projection canvases, bringing together artists from animation, film, motion design and experimental media from around the world.

Three Locations, Three Opportunities

For 2026, selected artists will project their work onto three historically significant buildings in the heart of Weimar:

House of the Weimar Republic — the birthplace of German democracy, a powerful canvas for works exploring civic values and political history.

Schiller’s Residence — the former home of Friedrich Schiller, one of Germany’s most celebrated poets and playwrights, connecting art with literary heritage.

Niketemple — a neoclassical monument offering a striking architectural form for experimental and abstract projection concepts.

One winning entry will be selected per building.

Competition Details

Theme: Democracy and Society
Submission format: 30-second concept video
Production budget: €7,000 per selected project to develop a full 5-minute work
Festival dates: September 11–13, 2026
Winners announced: July 6, 2026
Additional prize: One of the winning works will receive an extra €3,000 award during the festival itself.
Deadline: June 14, 2026 at 23:59

Who Can Apply?

The competition is open to artists from all disciplines — animation, film, motion design, experimental formats and beyond. International submissions are welcome. A strong concept is evaluated on historical awareness, architectural understanding and the relevance of the chosen theme.
